Living with a lactose intolerance

There are different types of cow's milk that are lactose-reduced or hydrolyzed. In the production of low-lactose milk, the lactose is filtered out, or a so-called one is used to separate the lactose from the rest of the milk. During hydrolysis, lactase is added to the milk.

These types of milk are more expensive than regular cow's milk and usually still contain a certain amount of lactose. It is therefore important to read the information on the packaging very carefully.

A review study showed that people who drank low-lactose milk (0 to 2 g of lactose per glass) experienced no fewer symptoms than people who drank a glass of conventional milk (with up to 12 g of lactose per glass). This is probably due to the fact that most people with lactose intolerance can tolerate up to 12 g of lactose anyway or feel only slight discomfort after consumption.

Other products such as lactase tablets or capsules are designed to help the intestine break down the lactose. Even if a lot is said about the effect of these products: So far, studies have not been able to prove that lactase tablets or capsules help.

Pre- or -, which help digest food in the intestine, were also examined. There are also those that contain this. So far it is unclear whether such remedies can help with lactose intolerance.

In summary, the research results so far show: Keeping your intake of lactose to the limits described above and only consuming milk at the same time as other foods is still the best known way to reduce symptoms of lactose intolerance.
