In China, elderly people deserve special respect; Age comes first. Younger people of lower status greet older people of higher status. Handshake between Chinese and Europeans is now common. Nevertheless, the guest should wait for the Chinese to shake hands - not the other way around.

As a courtesy, the Chinese greet foreign guests via handshake. The handshake shouldn't be too strong; eye contact not too intense and only briefly. Otherwise, Chinese, unlike Europeans, feel stared at.
