India: Around ten million girls aborted

Paris (rpo). In Indian culture, sons are more popular. They increase the family's reputation, carry the name on and look after their parents in old age. Girls, on the other hand, need an expensive dowry so that they can be married off at all. As researchers have now discovered, this preference for boys has resulted in female fetuses being aborted frequently. It is estimated that around ten million women are missing.

This is the result of an Indo-Canadian study published on Monday in the online edition of the British science journal "The Lancet". The researchers examined almost 134,000 births in around 1.1 million Indian households in 1997. In families in which the first child was a girl, there were only 759 girls for every 1,000 boys with the second child. If the first two children were girls, the ratio for the third child even decreased to less than 720 girls for 1,000 boys.

According to the researchers, the trend towards abortion of girls in India has intensified mainly due to advances in prenatal diagnostics. Since the spread of the ultrasound examination in India, according to the calculations of the researchers, around ten million girls have been aborted because of their sex alone in the past two decades.
