Asus ProArt StudioBook One: Quadro RTX 6000 on 15 inches with almost desktop performance

Notebook performance usually does not reach the level of desktop PCs. It will stay that way for the time being, but with the ProArt StudioBook One, Asus and Nvidia want to get very close to a size of just 15 inches. Powerful hardware is built in for this, including Intel's Core i9 and Nvidia's Quadro RTX 6000.

At IFA 2019, Nvidia is launching its own reference design for notebooks of the highest performance class. The program called "Ace" will first be found in the new Asus notebook ProArt StudioBook One, as hardware is almost exclusively the best. But with Ace, Nvidia also has additional requirements: only 15 inches, a good display and a special and significantly more complex cooling system that includes the CPU and GPU and can dissipate up to 300 watts.

The hardware is in the lid

A lot more is hidden behind the massive cooling construction. Because up to 300 watts also mean a lot of heat that Asus and Nvidia do not want to expose the palm rest and keyboard to. Therefore, the components all move from the base behind the display, so there is space under the keyboard for the 90 Wh battery and some smaller components.

The Asus ProArt StudioBook One is powered by a new eight-core processor of the type Intel Core i9-9980HK, which, according to Asus' data sheet, is accompanied by 32 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM, whereby the notebook is also equipped with 64 GB according to Nvidia can. The Quadro RTX 6000 takes on challenging graphical tasks, with 4,608 Cuda Cores, 24 GB RAM and everything that goes with it, the card corresponds exactly to the desktop specifications and has not been slimmed down.

Performance almost on a par with a desktop

However, this cannot be confirmed for the clock rates, there are no final figures for this yet. The TDP of the Quadro RTX 6000 is 250 watts according to the specifications once again confirmed by Nvidia, but in combination with the powerful eight-core CPU, even the 300-watt power supply unit should quickly see its limits. If the demands on the graphics are lower, an Optimus, which has been improved again according to Nvidia, is used so that the GPU integrated in the CPU can take over in this situation - this saves a lot of electricity and protects the battery. Nevertheless, Nvidia says that the mobile Quadro RTX 6000 should achieve up to 10 percent of the performance of the desktop version.

The 15.6-inch display brings UHD resolution and 100 percent coverage of the AdobeRGB color space, and the 364.5 × 245.0 × 24.2 mm large and 2.9 kg model also includes a 1 TB PCIe-SSD with a capacity, WLAN according to the ac standard, three USB-C solutions stand out for the connections, which are suitable for display output according to the Thunderbolt 3 standard.

Market launch in the first quarter of 2020

One catch remains at the end: In a conversation with journalists in front of the IFA, Nvidia emphasized that the company had only received samples a few days ago. Asus was also rather cautious on this point - for good reason: The ProArt StudioBook One will not be available before the first quarter of 2020. Asus has also not yet been able to name a price.

ComputerBase received information about this article from Asus under NDA. The only requirement was the earliest possible publication time.
